About ServSafe Classes

ServSafe Classes (Open to Everyone!)

The State of Georgia requires every food service establishment in the state to have at least one person on staff trained and certified for safe food handling. 

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s ServSafe® program is one of the top certification programs in the nation. 

 Topics covered include personal hygiene; receiving, cooking, holding and storage temperatures for foods; bacteria, parasites, viruses, molds, and fungi that cause food poisoning; HACCP programs; and Integrated Pest Control programs.  

Classes are designed for adults and teens over the age of 16.

 Training can be done over the course of ten weeks (recommended for younger students and those without food service training), one week, two days, or one day (only recommended for food service professionals).  The shorter the course, the more work the students are required to do on their own in preparation for the examination. 

 The test is a 90-question proctored print-based exam.  The student must receive a score of at least 75% to pass the exam and obtain the certification. 

Once the student has successfully passed the exam, a certificate suitable for framing is issued by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation . 

Certification is valid for five years and can be renewed. 

 Program Costs include the book and test form, in-class exercises, demonstrations, and the proctored exam.   Testing occurs at the end of the last day of class.   In the event that the student does not score at least 75% on the test, they must purchase a new test form and re-take the exam.  In that instance, they may sit through the 1-day training session again at no additional cost beyond the Testing Fee.

About Chef Christy

Christine Seelye-King is a professional Chef Instructor, teaching culinary skills to students of all ages from small children through senior citizens. 

She is a certified ServSafe instructor and proctor for the National Restaurant Association. 

Christine served a 3-year chef’s apprenticeship through the American Culinary Foundation, becoming the first woman to graduate from the program in the South East in 1984. 

Since then her job titles have included Restaurant and Bar Manager,
Personal Chef, Chef Instructor, Health and Education Coordinator for Sevananda Natural Foods, Mad Scientist and currently, Mrs. Claus.
